To thrive as a school community, each of us as citizens needs to believe that our voice matters and that our actions make a difference. Character includes a commitment to ourselves, our schools, our neighbourhoods, our country and our global community. “Make yourself useful to somebody!” as Ralph Waldo Emerson stated so poignantly. Character means personal and social responsibility, and demonstrating our shared values of honesty, empathy, and integrity. It means we invest our courage and perseverance in service and teamwork with a dedication to always share of ourselves with those who are in need.
It is important for our young people to understand that part of being a Canadian citizen, and also a resident of planet Earth, is contributing positively to our school and our community in our daily thoughts, actions and decisions. Our students need to be encouraged to respect the rights of others, embrace diversity, reject intolerance, promote a culture of peace, and take care of each other and the environment. These are some of the core values that develop and strengthen the character of our young people, and in turn our communities.
We look forward to an exciting year full of achievement, adventure and discovery. We are hopeful that this will be a year where our students continue to challenge themselves daily inside and outside the classroom, through the development of their individual talents in the areas of curiosity, wonder, creativity, innovation and perseverance.
